New Uncanny Gallery is an artist-run, artist-directed transdisciplinary exhibition space founded in 2024. Located in West Harlem, the project seeks to equitably support artists through exhibition opportunities, public programs, and events. We are a space committed to a core proposition: to investigate art that reflects on the nature of the uncanny in all its definitions and ethos–be it aesthetic, subversive, technological, surreal, cognitive, mythological, or existential. We survey how this concept intersects with our surrounding environment and with various disciplines and visualities. At New Uncanny, we have a specific interest in the intersection of gamification and contemporary art.
Our mission is to show a diverse array of artists working across painting and new media and give artists space to reflect, think, and create site-specific performances and work that resonates with our experimental space. Our artists critically engage in various mediums and participate wittingly in cultural criticism. Our programming, from exhibitions to artist talks to performances– aims to recognize artists who elude audience expectations of the surreal and uncanny, reflecting on the realities of living. We strive to bring a dynamic influx of ideas to the West Harlem community and the New York creative landscape as a whole.
Join us for our inaugural show, OVERLOAD, opening May 23rd, 2024, until June 3rd.
